Union City, Ind. (Vocus) August 28, 2008 -- The first significant answer to the market need for better fuel economy with Class A (bus style) motor homes will be launched at the annual Pennsylvania RV and Camping Show in Hershey, Pa., Sept. 10 to 14 (public days) at the HERSHEYPARK Entertainment Complex - GIANT Center℠.

The show will introduce all-new Avanti (which means "forward" in Italian) from Damon Motor Coach (Booth 513), the first motor home to be built on the W16D front-engine diesel platform from Workhorse Custom Chassis. The W16D is a 16,000 lb. GVWR diesel powered platform that is both lower and narrower than traditional class A motor home chassis, enabling lower, sleeker motor home body designs.

The initial Avanti model is 31 ½ feet long and designed to be a more fuel efficient and easier-to-drive Class A motor home. Combining a sleek, low-to-the-ground, aerodynamic design with the re-engineered Workhorse chassis, the Avanti is expected to achieve up to 70 percent better fuel economy than comparable Class A motor homes, based on internal test results.

In addition, Vice President of Avanti Sales Matt Thompson describes the Avanti's drivability as "awesome." The Avanti's coach is nearly 12 inches closer to the ground than any other Class A motor home and is six inches narrower. The low center of gravity, combined with the excellent ride and handling of the Workhorse chassis, gives it "an automotive feel," said Thompson. "I think people will find it fun to drive. Certainly not like any other Class A."

The RV-enhanced W16D chassis marks the latest in a series of chassis firsts from Workhorse that have multiplied motor home choices for consumers over the past decade. It will be on display at Workhorse Booth G by the GIANT Center along with the 2009 Chevy Workhorse Class C platform with best-in-class towing capacity.

The W16D also marks the first appearance of the MaxxForce™ 5 V6 diesel engine from Navistar International Corporation (NYSE: NAV) in a motor home. The MaxxForce 5 is mated to an Allison 1000 Series transmission and produces 200 horsepower and 440 ft.-lbs. of torque. Other key W16D features that enhance the drivability and manageability of the motor home include high-performance Brembo 4-wheel disc brakes, 50-degree wheel cut and electronic instrument cluster with full instrumentation and information center.

Leading edge technology makes the MaxxForce 5 a "clean diesel" engine that improves both emission levels and fuel efficiency. That and the relatively light weight of the Workhorse chassis both contribute to the Avanti's fuel economy and payload capacity.

That capacity means the Avanti can put diesel class storage and amenities into a smaller motor home, enabling owners of larger motor homes to conveniently downsize. Thompson calls the storage space on the Avanti "phenomenal." ''Our 31 1/2-foot model has as much storage than a comparable 37-foot coach,'' he said. ''We worked hard to utilize every square inch.''

Union City, Ind. (Vocus) April 1, 2008-- In the midst of a down market, the Chevy Workhorse cab chassis for Class C motor homes continues to increase market share, growing to 28 percent for 2007, a 5 point increase over its 2006 average. That growth continued in early 2008 as the chassis captured 30 percent market share for January. Figures are based on vehicle registration data compiled by Statistical Surveys of Grand Rapids, Mich.

The January 2008 figure represents a 17 point increase over the platform’s 2004 average market share of 13 percent, which was the last year the chassis appeared exclusively under the Chevrolet badge. Late that year, GM and Workhorse announced that the cutaway platform would be co-branded as a Chevrolet-Workhorse product for the 14,050 lb. GVWR model. In 2005, the joint badging was extended to the 9,600 lb. and 12,300 lb. GVWR models. Market share rose to 18 percent in 2005 and to 23 percent in 2006.

“The Workhorse-GM relationship on this chassis has certainly resonated with RVers, even when the motor home market has been down,” said Bill Walmsley, Workhorse director of RV marketing.
“With the 2008 upgrades to horsepower and other features, we expect this platform to continue to capture a greater share of the Class C motor home market. This chassis shows the way engineers have thought about the motor home experience and how to make it more comfortable, convenient and more like an SUV experience. We expect this chassis to continue to evolve in that direction and become a significant force in the motor home market.”
Actually roomy

“What a lot of people like about it is that, for a Class C chassis, the cab comes the closest to what you might actually call ‘roomy,’” said Walmsley. Large foot wells provide space to stretch out on long trips. A forward-mounted engine doghouse leaves more room to get in and out of seats from the inside, while wide step pads make it easier to get in from the outside. Oversized door storage pockets provide extra room for maps and gear.

Meanwhile, the redesigned cockpit for ‘08 puts more controls than ever at easy reach, starting with a new steering wheel with new cruise control activation. A new radio adds MP3 capabilities with convenient switches and dials. New HVAC control knobs and childproof window switches add more convenience and safety.

The new 2008 gauge cluster also enhances driver visibility while adding a Driver Information Center. This dash-mounted screen provides maintenance reminders for systems including the A/C, air bag, battery and antitheft system. Along with various engine function warning messages, it provides a fuel status that includes fuel used, fuel range, and average fuel economy.

“Add the upgraded seating and you’ve got a very comfortable and user-friendly new cab that will definitely enhance the driving experience,” said Walmsley.

Many user-friendly touches
Some of the other user-friendly touches Walmsley notes include the labeled and easy to find fluid fills and engine monitoring points. A step on the front bumper makes it easier to reach the windshield for cleaning. Battery rundown protection, lockout prevention and retained accessory power provide another safety net.

And, speaking of safety: the front bumper attaches directly to the frame and a strong cross member, increasing the coach’s crush zone and its ability to absorb energy during front-end impacts. Large anti-lock front disc brakes with twin piston calipers provide sure stopping, while Dynamic Rear Proportioning adjusts brake pressure toward the front or rear as needed.

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) January 4, 2008 -- Workhorse Custom Chassis has now extended the range of motor homes able to use its groundbreaking UFO chassis with a rear gas engine. A new 22,000 lb. GVWR version of the 26,000 lb. GVWR Workhorse UFO chassis will be on display to the public for the first time at the Florida RV SuperShow in Tampa Jan. 16 to 20.

Those attending the show will have the opportunity to experience first-hand what all the fuss is about. Workhorse will offer test drives on coaches built on the heavier-duty UFO chassis. Show goers can reserve at test drive now by going to www.worhorse.com/driveaufo/tampa. Or at the show they can go to Workhorse booth No. 145 to sign up.

“With the 22,000 lb. GVWR option, Workhorse brings RVers yet another choice in the 22,000 to 26,000 lb. GVWR segment of the motor home market,” said Bill Walmsley, director of RV marketing for Workhorse.

“Workhorse was the first chassis manufacturer to establish a front gas engine presence in this segment, first with our 22,000 lb. GVWR W22 chassis in 2000, and then with our 24,000 lb. and 25,500 lb. GVWR models in 2003 and 2005. Both of these latter chassis enabled many diesel-like options for bigger homes, like 22.5-inch wheels.

“Our research has also shown that 70 percent of RVers would prefer a rear-engine motor home. So now, we’ve added the UFO chassis as a useful option on both ends of that mid- to large-size motor home segment. Once again, we think this puts us ahead of the curve in giving RVers what they want.

“Altogether, Workhorse provides more gas and diesel choices, across a greater range of GVWRs, than any other chassis manufacturer,” concluded Walmsley.

Advantages of a rear engine include less cabin noise and heat. Without the front-to-back drive shaft, there’s also less vibration and less horsepower loss as well as more pass-through basement storage. The lack of a “doghouse” front-engine cover in the cab also makes it easier to move around.

As a result of the Workhorse UFO chassis, motor home buyers are able to obtain many of these rear-engine diesel benefits for the less-expensive cost of a gas coach. “That’s a great added value,” said Walmsley.

The new, smaller capacity platform retains the same GM Vortec™ 8.1L gas powerplant mated to a six-speed automatic Allison transmission, as well as the other benefits that have given the UFO chassis 100 percent “excellent” or “good” ratings in fall test drives.

“The ride and handling scores for this chassis have been superlative, and OEMs have started to take advantage of the new design options this chassis offers,” said Walmsley. The UFO chassis enables coach manufacturers to build on a completely flat floor from front to back, with no engine hump in either the front or the rear. So smaller motor homes can now boast floorplans similar to diesels, or go beyond what even diesels can offer because they don’t have to put a bed and related furniture in back to cover the diesel engine hump.

“You could have a rear living area, for example,” said Walmsley,

<itunes:subtitle>The Latest in Motor Home Driving: Workhorse to Show New 22,000 lb. GVWR Version of UFO™ Chassis at Tampa RV Show </itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Tampa, FL (PRWEB) January 4, 2008 -- Workhorse Custom Chassis has now extended the range of motor homes able to use its groundbreaking UFO chassis with a rear gas engine.

Union City, IN (PRWEB) December 5, 2007 -- Workhorse Custom Chassis is the first manufacturer to offer the all new, power-enhanced Cat® C7 engine in a motor home chassis.

Gulf Stream’s Crescendo and Yellowstone rear diesel motor homes are the first to use Workhorse’s Cat-powered diesel pusher chassis. The new models were introduced at the California RV Show in Pomona this fall. The Yellowstone model immediately sold to a couple from Palm Desert, Calif. The chassis was also one of the highlights at the National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Ky., last week.

The rear-engine diesel platform has a GVWR range of 28,000 to 32,000 lbs. and includes an Allison 3000 MH six-speed automatic transmission. It is available on all Crescendo and Yellowstone models from 36 to 40 feet. Workhorse is using the most powerful C7 developed to date, with 360 horsepower and 925 lb.-ft. of torque. The new engine’s common rail fuel system and variable nozzle turbocharger, enhanced electronics, and turbo brake all work to improve performance and lower operating costs.

Powerful engine, performance platform
The Workhorse R Series diesel chassis is Workhorse’s other rear engine chassis, not to be confused with the Workhorse UFO™ chassis that was launched last year. The R Series is known for outstanding ride and handling and rugged reliability.

Last year many chassis manufacturers consolidated diesel engine offerings, which provided Workhorse an opportunity to use the Caterpillar powerplant.

“The Cat has a loyal following among many RVers,” said Bill Walmsley, director of RV marketing for Workhorse. “So we are pleased to offer the engine in the mid-range diesel marketplace. It’s an excellent engine, and Caterpillar has been building a first class RV service network for it. The top-end C7 model we are using will provide a perfect complement to the superior ride and handling of the R Series diesel. It supplies the power and performance desired in this class of motor homes.”

“We are pleased to be the exclusive engine offering in the Workhorse R Series diesel chassis and look forward to introducing this product to the RV market,” said Suzie Adcock, Caterpillar senior account manager, OEM Sales Division. “The new, more powerful rating makes this engine the best C7 option yet for RVers, and we’re glad we can continue to be a significant presence in this market. Our Cat RV Center network continues to add new locations and we remain committed to giving RVers the same reliability, durability and fuel economy advantages that Cat engines have always delivered.”

Recently Caterpillar Inc. received the prestigious J.D. Power and Associates Award for ranking highest in customer satisfaction for its Pickup and Delivery Heavy-Duty diesel engines as part of the 2007 Heavy-Duty Truck Engine/Transmission StudySM. This award is the tenth that Caterpillar has received from J.D. Power for heavy-duty truck engine satisfaction in the 11 years the study has been undertaken.

“Cat and the R Series is a terrific combination that we’re proud to be a part of,” said Walmsley.

Advanced emissions technology
Cat’s C7 is 2007 emissions compliant thanks to its ACERT Technology that positions it to meet future EPA emissions regulations and provides a long-term emissions solution. ACERT Technology relies on four basic systems to lower emissions — air management, precision combustion, advanced electronics and effective after-treatment. These systems reduce particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbon emissions while preserving the engine’s reliability and...
Union City, IN (Vocus) October 18, 2007 -- A lot has changed under the skin of the walk-in truck recently. Now it is also going to look a bit different.

The premier delivery vehicle that is the backbone of the nation’s largest truck fleets, and a versatile model of durable, workaday efficiency, is getting a new nose and front grill that will clearly define it as a Workhorse truck.

This exterior face-lift is the latest in a series of significant walk-in changes introduced by Workhorse Custom Chassis, which manufacturers chassis for walk-in trucks, motor homes and buses. Workhorse is a wholly owned subsidiary of International Truck and Engine Corporation, and the grill of the new nose design makes the Workhorse walk-in a clear cousin of International’s models.

Workhorse-International synergy

“This design communicates a number of things,” said Jay Sandler, Workhorse vice president — commercial product. “First, this is a Workhorse truck that is obviously part of the International family. It shows at a glance the great synergy that is developing between Workhorse and International that reinforces our plan to grow the walk-in market for smaller fleets and the off-the-lot buyer.”

“Second, this design clearly says this is a truck, and a truck than can do some heavy lifting,” said Sandler. “As such, it communicates the capabilities of our new heavy-duty 23,500 lb. GVWR W62 chassis in respect to the tough jobs that trucks are needed for.”

Aimed at retail customer

“Third, this is a new look for a class of vehicle that has been pretty static in its appearance, but not static in terms of the significant automotive improvements that have been happening under the body. In that regard, this is aimed at the retail customer. We expect major fleets will continue to spec the same nose design they’ve been using, but for smaller fleets, and those who haven’t used a walk-in before, this new front says, ‘take a look at what’s different!’ If we get more of those folks to take a new look at what walk-ins can do, we think we’ll have a delivery and work truck solution that a lot of new customers will appreciate.

“Accordingly, we’re very excited about getting this truck out on dealer lots,” said Sandler. “This new design will only be built on Workhorse chassis, and so it will truly be a “Workhorse truck” in appearance as well as in operation.” Both Morgan Olson and Utilimaster will provide the bodies.

First appearance this month

The initial Workhorse model is now available on an 86-inch wide body. Within the next couple months, a 96-inch wide body will be offered. Both models have cargo body lengths from 10 to 22 feet, built on the full range of Workhorse gas and diesel chassis options from 9,400 lb. GVWR to 23,500 lb. GVWR. Workhorse uses General Motors 4.8, 6.0 and 8.1L Vortec™ gas engines and International’s 4.5L MaxxForce™ 5 V6 diesel powerplant.

The new truck made its first public appearance as part of the International Baking Industry Exposition in Orlando, Fla., Oct. 7 to 10. This week it is at the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition in Louisville, Ky.

This is the third major announcement involving Workhorse products this year. Workhorse launched its new heavy-duty W62 truck chassis in March. The W62 is the first chassis to offer both gas and diesel engine options in the higher 19,500 lb. and 23,500 lb. GVWR range for walk-in trucks. In May, Workhorse announced a variety of Extended Service Coverage plans to boost the warranty options available with... Jay Sandler, vice president of commercial products for Workhorse Custom Chassis, a truck chassis manufacturer, thinks medium-duty work trucks of all kinds powered mainly by electricity are only five to 10 years away.

While hybrid electric cars have been in the news for some time, only recently have hybrid truck options come to the fore for heavy-duty pick up and delivery chores, as well as for an array of construction, maintenance and service trucks. A recent trade show sponsored by the National Truck Equipment Association included a special display of hybrid trucks. At the same show, a special hybrid truck seminar sponsored by International Truck and Engine Corporation attracted an overflow crowd.

Looking for alternative power

With environmental concerns coupled to rising fuel and engine costs, the search for alternative fuels and other sources of power has never been more heated in the trucking industry. Major parcel delivery fleets, such as UPS, FedEx, Purolator of Canada and USPS have put a variety of hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles into experimental use. For most fleets, however, hybrid technology remains too expensive despite such advantages as a 30 to 50 percent reduction in fuel costs, less maintenance, less noise and fumes (helpful in residential areas), and the hybrid's environmental benefit.

Cost equation starting to change

However, events are starting to make hybrids more palatable. "2007 emission requirements have upped the cost of diesel engines to $4,000 to $10,000 more than 2006 models," says Sandler. "And more requirements and price increases are coming in 2010." Then add unpredictable but mostly higher fuel costs into the equation and you have fleets pressing engine and chassis manufacturers to find better solutions.

Sandler is a 30-year veteran of the trucking industry and his company has been one of those in the forefront of providing such solutions. "Workhorse and other manufacturers of trucks and truck components have been working with hybrid technology for some years now," said Sandler. "A number of fleets and companies have been very proactive in looking at multiple solutions that will contribute to a cleaner environment."

Workhorse recently developed two hybrid electric versions of its walk-in truck (step van) chassis for two different parcel delivery companies, Purolator of Canada and UPS.
Because these are custom builds, neither version is cheap. But with a few more developments, both hold promise, says Sandler.

"In the past year we engineered two totally different hybrid solutions and there's more we're looking at," said Sandler. "From a price standpoint, as orders go up, production costs will come down. But advancements in technology will also be key, particularly in terms of battery storage capacity. And I don't think we're far away from that."

Plugging into off-peak power
"At present, the hybrid battery pack is the most expensive component we add to make a hybrid electric truck,"... To read the press release in full goto http://www.prweb.com/releases/Workhorse_Custom_Chassis/hybrid_truck/prweb528798.htm

The manufacturer of chassis for walk-in trucks (also known as step vans) "has developed a new laser focus with our truck products and marketing" since its acquisition by International Truck and Engine Corporation in 2005, said Jay Sandler, Workhorse vice president of commercial product.

Walk-in trucks, because of their easy stand-up access to the interior cargo area, lower loading platform and easy entrance and exit out the curbside steps, are ergonomically superior and much more efficient than cab-and-box trucks for businesses performing multiple service stops. They also make ideal mobile warehouses and workshops for contractors or those involved in service work.

According to Sandler, there has been a recent surge in walk-in sales the last two years, which can be attributed to an increase in parcel delivery vehicles, as more people are shopping through the Internet, the Home Shopping Network and other sources. He says that trend should keep fleets expanding for several years, since for multiple stops over short distances, the walk-in truck is the perfect vehicle.

Recent developments have positioned Workhorse to take better advantage of this growing demand and, even more importantly, create additional demand.

The first "punch," you might say, is the rapid expansion of choices for walk-in users in terms of powerplants and truck capacity, driven by Workhorse's recent product offerings. In 2005 Workhorse revamped its mainstay chassis with significant ride, handling and performance improvements in its new W42 truck platform. Underneath the familiar skin, the walk-in was a new truck, similar to other new trucks. Also of significance, the W42 came with a choice of a gas or diesel engine.

The W42, however, was still limited to Workhorse's traditional range of 9,400 to 14,500 lb. GVWRs (gross vehicle weight ratings: the combined weight limit of a truck and its payload). That changed when Workhorse added a 16,000 lb. GVWR in 2006. Now Workhorse has added the heavier duty W62 in 2007 with GVWRs of 19,500 and 23,500 lbs. The W62 also provides the choice of gas or diesel engines, and this is the first time a gas option has been available for both those GVWRs -- an increasingly viable option for some fleets as diesel engines soar in cost. Workhorse now is the only company that covers the full range of options for medium and heavy duty walk-ins.

"The W62 represents a category we haven't been able to compete in before," said Sandler. "We saw a need for more choices up and down the GVW ladder, particularly with engines. We consider ourselves a customer-driven company, responsive to market needs. And if we're truly a trucking manufacturer, we need to be offering solutions to those needs."

But such options don't mean much if potential customers don't know about them and their benefits. "As a company, I think we can do a better job of reaching out to people about what these trucks can do," said Sandler. "Our research shows there's opportunity to obtain a significant number of new customers if we focus our efforts correctly."
