Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) August 21, 2008 -- Companion animals are more than just furry creatures on four legs; they are part of our American families. We give them attention, protection and love. Yet what many Americans don’t give them is the security of seeking veterinary care that includes treatment by a credentialed veterinary technician.

The range of medical treatment available for animals has increased exponentially in the past several decades. The public needs to make sure the veterinary clinic they choose hires credentialed veterinary technicians, ensuring the person treating their animal is educated in the latest medical advances and working alongside veterinarians to give pets the best medical care possible.

The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, Inc. (NAVTA) will celebrate October 12-18, 2008 by recognizing National Veterinary Technician Week. “Vet Tech Week provides an opportunity to honor the veterinary technician for the outstanding job they do. It also provides NAVTA with an opportunity to educate companion animal owners about the benefits of working with a veterinarian that employs credentialed veterinary technicians, which is equally important,” stated Andrea Ball, executive director of NAVTA.

“Credentialed technicians receive more than a degree from an accredited veterinary program. Most are required to take a certification exam and many complete ongoing training in the classroom and on the job to keep up with medical advances and the wide range of animal care disciplines, which range from small pets to livestock and exotic species. When you invest in medical treatment for your pet, in return, you should receive the best care possible and a credentialed veterinary technician helps ensure this happens.” National Veterinary Technician Week is also a time to acknowledge the veterinarians who hire credentialed veterinary technicians, recognizing the important role they play in pet healthcare.

NAVTA is a nonprofit organization that represents and promotes the profession of Veterinary Technology. NAVTA provides direction, education, support and coordination for its members. Incorporated in 1981, NAVTA is the national organization devoted exclusively to developing and enhancing the profession of veterinary technology. They take a year round approach toward educating and promoting veterinary technicians through conferences, tradeshows, and a poster campaign sponsored by Ft. Dodge Animal Health. Companion animals give us unconditional love and veterinary technicians give us peace of mind and they should be celebrated during National Veterinary Technician Week. More information about NAVTA and this special week can be found at www.navta.net.

Walnut Creek, CA (PRWEB) August 14, 2008 -- Learn from San Francisco Bay Area author Dan Moore, who wrote just released "Through The Wall of Rain and Fog" when he was 16, how harrowing every day life can be for teenagers.

In a raw, authentic voice he explores high school friendship, despair, and hope, and insists we join the characters' search for meaning. He propels the reader along with intimate revelation as we walk, run, and ultimately race headlong into the unknown - witness to the characters' ragged, wrenching ascent into adulthood.

The painful, promising plot takes the reader's breath away, as the author shows us how quickly every day situations can spiral out of control. He propels the reader along with intimate revelation as we walk, run, and ultimately race headlong into the unknown - witness to the characters' ragged, wrenching ascent into adulthood. Moore's clear talent - his ability to craft dialogue and to express the inexpressible - leaves the reader spellbound, uncomfortable, loving the characters, and longing for more. Moore's next book, "The Summer of Billy Stevens", arrives in early 2009.

Audience/Comparables: Aimed at young adult readers, the book has broad appeal as teen alienation is a dangerous issue today. Parents will be riveted by the insight Dan provides into the hearts and minds, the intensity and sensitivity, and the interpretation of experience of teenagers growing up today. Some have compared the book to Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs or "The Outsiders" by S. E. Hinton.

About the Author: Dan Moore is now an 18-year-old living in the suburbs of San Francisco, on his way to college. He writes because he must, and still believes that Disco Cow, written in second grade, is his best work. His observations often develop into funny, frightening, irresistible narratives with vivid characters and alarming insights. His friends mean the world to him, but his most trusted companions are his morbidly obese dog and overweight cat.

Early Comments from Readers and Reviewers:
"...a debut novel focused on the power of friendship... In fact, the only thing Chris Walker seems to have in his favor is his friends: Dave, Nyle and Jamar. ...But author Moore, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate himself, quickly calls the boys' bond into question… Moore settles into his characters...captures readers, creating vivid portraits of teenage confusion, anger and chaos..." --Kirkus Discoveries

"The story ...has me hooked. I am eager to turn each page... His characters are clearly drawn and his dialog is right on target, nothing stilted, very authentic. I really care about everyone in his story and that is a very good sign." --Mary Embree, Executive Director, California Literary Arts Society

"...book caught my attention ...sounded a lot like what my son went through…I really got into it and found that I couldn't put it down. ...I knew I was reading something that allowed me insight into the crazy world of teenage boys these days…it is actually a great story. ...an awesome job of drawing the reader in, helping the reader get to know the characters." --Brenda Burke, Mother, Teen Aged Boys

Published by Rockhill Books, ''What's Next in Your Life?'' is written to appeal to the nation's 76 million baby boomers who, while they may have already planned for their financial retirement, need the tools to plan for a more fulfilling and rewarding life after 50, according to Ms. Strewler-Carter.

"The media continues to hammer the message of planning for your financial retirement, when there are so many non-financial issues to be considered including: at what age do you retire, do you continue working, do you relocate, consider wellness issues, etc." adds Mr. Carter.

Internationally recognized authorities on career and life planning, the Carters provide guidelines on how to approach retirement, present several options, and offer advice and how-to steps that help to explain the non-financial aspects of retirement.

Written in a simple and direct style that presents information quickly and clearly, ''What's Next in Your Life?'' is easy to read yet covers a great deal of important material. It includes personal anecdotes from people facing retirement or already retired to illustrate critical points.

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) August 13, 2008 -- It's a struggle that all working moms face: Juggling responsibilities as a mom and employee without neglecting family; jeopardizing workplace status; and most importantly, forsaking sanity. But what about the challenges that working moms face during their child's kindergarten year in school? After all, starting school is a major adjustment for kids and a whole new learning experience for working moms as well.

In her first book, "Corporate to Kindergarten" (ISBN: 978-1-60034-642-2, available at www.amazon.com and www.raiglover.com), award-winning executive Raichelle "Rai" Glover shares her personal, weekly diary of the joys and struggles she faced while being the mother of a kindergartener and managing a thriving corporate career. The book features witty, thought-provoking, and realistic insights that are sure to resonate with working moms or "moms who work outside the home."

For Glover, the book is an opportunity to let working moms know that they are not alone in their kindergarten experiences. "A child's first year in school is a unique time for working moms," says Glover, who became one of the youngest retirees at Bank of America in 2007. "This is a new horizon for kids and another level of commitment and nurturing for working moms and dads because we want to provide all the support we can - and still meet the demands of the workplace. I vowed that I would share my kindergarten journey with other parents and here it is."

Readers will laugh, cry, and relate to Glover as she reveals:
•Dealing with the guilt of being a parent and having a career.
•Explaining to her son why mommy is "leaving in the dark time" for work, again.
•Ongoing feelings of "did I raise my child right?" and "should I home school, private school, stay at home, work part-time, flex-time, or no-time?"
•Racing from corporate meetings to PTA meetings.
•How focusing and refocusing on faith and family puts life's daily challenges into perspective.
"The one thing that I want working moms to take away from Corporate to Kindergarten is that there is a light at the end of the tunnel -- even when hard choices and sacrifices have to be made along the way. That's what I learned during our kindergarten year in school."

Glover launched the motivational speaking and leadership coaching firm Rai Glover Consulting in April 2008. The business offers motivational speaking and leadership coaching solutions across a variety of industries. Prior to this, she enjoyed a twenty-three year career with Bank of America and its predecessor banks.

During this time, Glover held nine different positions, most recently serving as Senior Vice President and Market Development Manager for Bank of America's Human Resources, a position that focused on community relations. Glover retired from Bank of America in 2007, becoming one of the youngest retirees under the bank's "Rule of 60" qualifications -- age plus years of service totaling 60 or greater. Glover's recent honors and recognitions include a 2007 BOB (Best of the Best) award by Charlotte Magazine; 2006 Person of Prominence by The Charlotte Post Newspaper; 2006 Most Supportive Person of the Latin American Community presented by La Noticia, The Spanish-Language Newspaper; a 2005 Maya Angelou Women Who Lead award presented by Dr. Maya Angelou; and a...
Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) -- New cases of HIV infection in the U.S. have been underestimated by 40% every year for more than a decade. This was the surprising announcement made by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC HIV fact sheets) at the 17th International AIDS Conference in Mexico City.

The revised calculations mean that at least 56,000 Americans are infected with HIV annually instead of the 40,000 previously thought. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS, a disease that remains incurable. Tragically more than 15,000 Americans die of AIDS every year. Early detection is important so that treatment may begin as soon as possible and assist delaying the onset of serious complications. In addition, knowing your status will enable you to take the necessary steps in preventing the transmission of HIV to others.

These new numbers "reveal that the U.S. epidemic is - and has been - worse than previously estimated and serve as a wake-up call for all Americans," said Richard Wolitski, acting director of the division of HIV / AIDS prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sophisticated new blood-testing methods combined with consistent reporting methods now used by all states have resulted in more accurate estimates and revealed a much higher yearly incidence of new infections. The CDC estimates that about 1 million to 1.1 million Americans are HIV-positive. Using the new figures we can estimate that there are roughly 225,000 more people with HIV than previously suspected.

Shockingly more than 1/3 of new infections are in youth ages 13 to 29, and disturbingly, 25% of persons infected don't know they carry the HIV virus. These eye opening statistics make early HIV tests and diagnosis more important than ever.

There is still hope even after a positive result, however, thanks to powerful combinations of drugs that are allowing patients who are HIV-positive to live for decades with the disease. It's the test that makes early detection possible, catching the virus before it can damage the immune system beyond repair, which is critically important. Confidentiality is also an important factor since fear of being stigmatized often stops people from being tested.

The CDC's revised statistics regarding new HIV infections is bound to bring attention to the continuing problem of AIDS in America. It highlights the need for funding to prevent and treat the disease and emphasizes the critical importance of early detection.

San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) (PRWEB) July 29, 2008 -- Come August, the world's eyes will be on China as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad take place in Beijing. For those who want to complement daily media accounts of swim times, medal ceremonies and gymnastics scores with a late-summer read, "The Dharma King" will hit the shelves just in time.

Described as a thrilling novel of one man's quest to save Tibet - and himself - "The Dharma King" is an epic chase to find and bring the baby Panchen Lama, the spiritual counterpart to the Dalai Lama, to safety.

The timely story guides the reader to examine the competing interests of capitalism and spirituality, China's emergence onto the world stage, Tibet's future and the personal struggle to find meaning in a changed world, says B.G. Stroh, while raising individuals' spiritual awareness.

"The inescapable tragedy of the current Tibetan situation drew me to the struggles of the Panchen Lama," explains Stroh, who has traveled throughout Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal, and studied Tibetan Buddhism. "The novel ties together one man's personal quest with responsibility for something greater in the world in a fascinating story."

The story traces the physical and spiritual journal of a young American man, the eldest son of a wealthy San Francisco family. With a guaranteed life of privilege and power ahead of him, he books a flight to Kathmandu on a whim after college graduation - a flight with events that will change him forever.

Samuel Falk Simms, Jr., races against time, a vicious Chinese colonel and his own demons to save what may be the last hope of a religion and culture in peril. Searching Buddhist temples and foreign cities, and crossing the Himalayan plains, he is guided by a fleeting glimpse of an obscure map, a new love and the long-buried truth within him.

On his journey to find the Panchen Lama, says Stroh, Sam comes to terms with a deeper level of meaning in his own life. "I hope that each reader can be his or her own 'Dharma King' and follow his or her own path by being mindful and aware…because until we take personal responsibility for the world that we live in, and until we each follow our own hearts, nothing will change."

"The Dharma King" is published by iUniverse, Inc., and is available at Barnes & Noble bookstores, at Amazon.com, through iUniverse, Inc. or at DharmaKing.com ($14.95 U.S./paperback, $23.95 U.S./hardcover), where readers can access the full first chapter of the book.
Hicksville and Hauppauge, NY (PRWEB) July 25, 2008 -- Learn all about macular degeneration, including how to monitor your vision, preventative measures, and current treatments at a free seminar at the Farmingdale Public Library on August 15 at 1:00 p.m. The presentation will feature James M. Maisel M.D. and Joanna J. Oda, M.D., vitreoretinal specialists from the Retina Group of New York. As people live longer, they are subject to increasing incidence of age-related macular degeneration. Seniors may be unaware that they are at risk for vision loss and that treatments may be available for them. The doctors will discuss the symptoms, causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of age-related macular degeneration and answer questions. Preference will be given to UFSD #22 residents. Farmingdale Library patrons may pre-register without charge for this program over the phone at (516) 249-9090 using their library card.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe visual loss in patients over 65 and occurs almost exclusively in seniors. The macula is the center portion of the retina and is used for straight-ahead vision. It is the only part of the retina capable of providing the fine vision necessary for reading and detailed work. There is a dry and wet form of the disease. The more common dry form causes pigmentation of the macula, similar to aging spots on the skin, is slowly progressive and accounts for only about 15% of severe central visual loss. It can be slowed with certain vitamins and diet. The wet, or exudative form of macular degeneration is less common but accounts for about 85% of visual loss and is the leading cause of blindness in seniors. This form results when abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina start to leak. Early treatment is critical since without treatment these leaking blood vessels almost always cause scarring with irreversible visual loss. Since July, 2006, Lucentis, an FDA approved medication, has dramatically improved treatment for the wet form, and has stabilized vision in over 90% of patients and improved vision in about one third.

And when people operate in this zone of peak performance, they ultimately increase their personal productivity.

"People can't always change their environment, but they can develop mastery in how they respond," says Byron Stock. Applying five quick, easy techniques, grounded in 15 years of scientific research enables people to enhance their Emotional Intelligence skills, transform negative emotions and more adeptly manage the complexities of our busy work world.

For over 13 years, Stock has been teaching EI techniques, helping business professionals focus on accomplishing personal goals such as reducing stress and worry, managing emotional reactiveness, making better decisions, and more. To offer these benefits beyond a workshop format, Stock recently compiled his work into his new book, 'Smart Emotions for Busy Business People.' A former workshop participant said, "I can divide my world by the date I learned how to apply the techniques in 'Smart Emotions'…they are…literally life-changing."

Some actions that can be taken to enhance skill in the first two competencies (emotional self-awareness and emotional self-regulation) include:
•	Notice and name emotions -- being able to name emotions provides information that can be used in making decisions, or choosing what to say or not to say in particular situations. The learner can access an online pocket card that provides a variety of emotions clustered under six categories. The card can be used to help build an emotional vocabulary.
•	Identify triggers to negative emotions -- these can be people, events, or situations that frequently trigger a strong negative emotional response. By recognizing triggers, especially those that generate negative emotions, the learner will know when it might be helpful to change or regulate his or her emotions (the second EI competency: emotional self-regulation).
•	Identify what's important in life and the positive emotions this evokes -- these positive emotions are the emotions the learner will want to experience more frequently. Increased frequency in experiencing these kinds of emotions is related to more positive energy, and research shows that when the emotions are positive, thinking is clearer and better decisions are made.

The new medical insurance program will be available in Arizona only, but application in other states may follow.

This new affordable medical insurance plan is a departure from NextCare's other medical discount programs, X+raCare and ValueCare, as it is an actual medical insurance program insured by Pan-American Life Insurance Company. X+raCare and ValueCare are two medical discount programs that provide discounted healthcare options to uninsured and underinsured patients, while CareForToday will provide a limited insurance plan at an affordable price.

The CareForToday program is designed for business owners and their employees who otherwise would not be able to afford insurance plans. Low-income families and those in need of coverage will also benefit from CareForToday as savings can reach over 50% in many cases.

"We look forward to offering healthcare accessibility to employers who were previously unable to offer any form of medical coverage to their employees with the CareForToday plan," explains Laurel Stoimenoff, President of NextCare Urgent Care.

USNow, a nationally recognized limited medical marketing organization partnering with NextCare, will begin selling this product in the Phoenix Area in June 2008.

"Given that we are having more and more compensation seeking veterans," she wrote. "I'd like to suggest that you refrain from giving a diagnosis of PTSD straight out. Consider a diagnosis of Adjustment Disorder."

Dr. Perez has since argued that her email was meant to better support veterans who sometimes struggle to get a correct diagnosis. Critics say that her email is a sign that the VA is cutting back on appropriate care for soldiers by using a lesser diagnosis that is not eligible for the same services as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

An April 2008 private study found that at least 300,000 American military personnel are suffering from PTSD but according to Pentagon findings only 40,000 veterans have been officially diagnosed.

Mark Dombeck, PhD, Director of MentalHelp.net, says that PTSD can be challenging to identify. He adds that this may be the reasoning behind Dr. Perez's controversial email.

PTSD is a reaction to violent, dangerous trauma that causes intense stress and fear. The intensity of his or her experience causes the trauma to be written into the victim's memory. Veterans suffering from PTSD are unable to turn off obsessive thoughts about their experiences and so are forced to re-live their fear and horror over and over again.

People suffering with PTSD often present with the following symptoms:
• Dissociation
• Intrusive trauma memories at inconvenient times
• Intense clarify of recall
• Nightmares or hallucinations
• Substance abuse
• Reclusive behavior and avoidance
• Jumpiness, heightened startle response
• Hyperawareness
• Guilt over surviving trauma

Treatments for PTSD include medications and psychotherapy.

Adjustment Disorder can be used as a temporary label for a veteran whose testing is not yet complete but who needs services.

"Adjustment Disorder is a stress disorder in its own right," says Dr. Dombeck. "When it's used to address the need for further testing then it's an appropriate diagnosis. But if it's used for political purposes - like to save the VA from having to pay out money to a disabled veteran - then that amounts to malpractice."

Dr. Dombeck says he is sympathetic to the challenges of the Veteran's Administration but adds that his first concern is for struggling veterans and their need for effective, ongoing mental health support.

"In our current war-time circumstances the serious issue is how quickly can veterans can get the care they need to address their healthcare concerns," says Dr. Dombeck. "We're happy to fund the actions...
