Ojai, CA (PRWEB) September 25, 2008 -- Laurel Springs School, the accredited leader in college prep private schools offering distance learning programs and teacher services for students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade, today announces its new partnership with Power-Glide Language Courses, Inc., the leader in foreign language training materials for independent learners.

Laurel Springs students can now learn Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Latin through Power-Glide's award-winning language courses that engage students through video, stories, graphics, music, games and avatars. The innovative courses are age-appropriate and were developed specifically for elementary, middle school and high school students. All courses are aligned to national and state standards, include online assessments, oral and written exercises, tools for recording and listening to your work, and more.

"Adding the foreign language courses by Power-Glide strengthens our college preparatory curriculum in the area of foreign languages. Laurel Springs students now have the opportunity to maximize their potential to get into the very best colleges and universities," said Marilyn Mosley Gordanier, executive director and founder of Laurel Springs School. Gordanier went on to say, "As families become aware of their educational options, distance learning is now a viable alternative. I believe learning can take place in many environments and our student performance is indicative its success. Distance Learning is an idea whose time has come and many families are embracing this dynamic form of learning. At Laurel Springs we can offer students a foreign language program as a concurrent or dual enrollment, or a complete full-time college prep curriculum as their school of record." Jim Blair, CEO of Power-Glide said, "As states change their foreign language requirements to a minimum of two years, students are now looking outside of their schools for language courses and Laurel Springs provides a stable environment for our courses to be delivered. The Power-Glide philosophy of honoring different learning styles of students is parallel to Marilyn's philosophy at Laurel Springs School."

Staying true to its mission that each child is a unique human being with personal interests, special talents and a recognizable learning style, Laurel Springs School now offers its homeschool students foreign language courses that reflect this mission. The school's entire educational model honors the unique learning styles of its students; with the Power-Glide partnership, home-based Laurel Springs students now have access to learning foreign languages according to their particular learning style. "Teaching an auditory or visual learner a foreign language outside of the traditional classroom setting through a wide variety of courses and interactive materials is revolutionary," said Mosley Gordanier.

Ojai, CA (PRWEB) February 25, 2008 -- Laurel Springs School, the leader in personalized distance learning education for K-12 students, today announced the launch of a new online high school dedicated to the advancement of gifted and talented students -- Laureate School for the Gifted and Talented.

As a renowned leader in online distance learning for K-12 homeschool students, Laurel Springs School has been educating gifted and talented students since 1991. After years of hands on work with gifted and talented students, it became evident to Laurel Springs School that there was a need for a comprehensive and innovative school for these students. Laureate School for the Gifted and Talented stems from more than seventeen years of Laurel Springs' educational excellence. Laureate School offers gifted high school students around the world one-to-one instruction through an academically demanding curriculum. Gifted students have the opportunity to learn skills and concepts on more intense levels of analysis and exploration, to work closely with a personal advisor and a teaching team that includes core teacher, personal advisor, and to profit from an intensive college placement service. The Laureate School experience is designed to prepare gifted high school students for top colleges and universities.

Gifted and talented students are those who display an extraordinary or accelerated understanding of topics presented to them in school. The National Association for Gifted and Talented Children (Nagc.org) reports that approximately three million children are considered to be gifted, which is six percent of the entire student population in America.

"Laurel Springs School works with gifted and talented students every day, but the demand for a unique school, focusing on meeting the specific needs of gifted students, was apparent. We are excited to be able to offer Laureate School to those individuals," said Marilyn Mosley-Gordanier, executive director and founder of Laurel Springs School and Laureate School for the Gifted and Talented.

In traditional schools, gifted students are often overlooked because they continuously perform well, or they fall behind because they become bored at school without a challenge. Teachers and staff dedicate more time and energy to struggling students, as The No Child Left Behind Act encourages. Currently, the only way schools cater to the needs of these exceptional students is to offer enrichment courses for two hours each week. Two hours a week is less than 10 percent of a child's typical school week.

Unfortunately, the NCLB Act is leaving the gifted and talented behind. According to the U.S. Department of Education, only two cents of every one hundred dollars spent on education supports gifted and talented students (1993). The Davidson Institute, a non-profit organization that offers support to gifted students and their families, reports that currently 34 states require gifted programs, of which only eight are fully funded by the state. On the other hand, of the 16 states that do not require any gifted programming, more than half offer some type of funding.

Kayte Hamilton, PhD, was appointed director of Laureate School by Marilyn Mosley-Gordanier. Hamilton brings more than 20 years of experience teaching and working with gifted learners. "I'm proud to be involved with an online school offering gifted students a challenging curriculum with highly trained teachers and differentiated programs of study.
Ojai, CA (PRWEB) June 5, 2007 -- Laurel Springs School, the leader in personalized distance learning education for preK-12 students, and the UNEP Global 500 Forum today announced Kids4Earth, the first online environmental curriculum for grades six through eight. This integrated core science curriculum offers students the opportunity to learn about the environment, take action on a wide range of ecological and preservation issues, and become citizens who are aware of and connected to life on Earth.

Kids4Earth was written by Laurel Springs with support from members of the UNEP Global 500 Forum. Each of the 36 lessons focuses on the work of the Global 500 Laureates who have won international recognition for their achievements in bringing about environmental awareness and change. "Kids4Earth, an online educational tool for children, fits well with UNEP's mandate to educate and empower individuals to take a stand on behalf of the environment," said Eric Falt, the UNEP Director of the Division of Communications and Public Information. "The course, with weekly lessons and environmental activities, unites the technology of the Internet with concerns for the environment. It also provides children with role models of real people who have been acknowledged by UNEP as examples of global stewardship or leadership. We welcome this initiative."

Students study a wide range of environmental issues as they relate to life, physical and earth sciences. Environmental pioneers like Jane Goodall and Globetree Foundation share their stories and experiences and through their journeys, students explore the planet and its plants, animals and people. The mission of Kids4Earth is to "empower children individually and collectively to help restore the Earth and become its responsible stewards." Kids4Earth ensures that students are informed and empowered to take action on a wide range of environmental activities. Working closely with the UN Global 500 Forum, the United Nations Environmental Programme, the Learning Springs Learning Corporation, and the Laurel Springs Educational Foundation, Laurel Springs School aims to offer the course to children around the world.

Laurel Springs has long been involved with charitable activities, and bettering the environment has remained a top priority for the school. Laurel Springs School is an accredited private school offering personalized distance learning programs for kindergarten through high school students. With more than 4,250 students in 50 states, as well as students in 43 countries, Laurel Springs makes use of web-based communication tools, a standards-based curriculum and personalized instruction to give each student an educational experience that is best for them. Under the guide of its director, Marilyn Mosley Gordanier, Laurel Springs has garnered such awards as the President's Environmental Youth Award, the United Nations Global 500 Award and the Earth Prize. Gordanier herself was a key presenter at the UNEP's International Children's Conference on the Environment in Malaysia in 2006.

Laurel Springs has decided to take the next step and offer a Kids4Earth course as part of its regular curriculum. It was developed by Laurel Springs director and Global 500 Forum president, Marilyn Mosley Gordanier and co-authored by Laurel Springs teacher, Beverly Mills in response to a perceived need for a socially conscious online environmental curriculum after numerous requests from parents and teachers. "Never before has a school put together an online program like this one.
Ojai, CA (PRWeb) March 2, 2007 -- Laurel Springs School, the leader in personalized distance learning education for K-12 students, granted full accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). WASC accreditation gives Laurel Springs School recognition for its commitment and focus on student learning and achievement. Laurel Springs was particularly acknowledged for its commitment to communication, alignment of curriculum to state standards, and the tailoring of educational programs to the individual learner.

Accreditation through WASC is an ongoing process of reporting and assessing progress with periodic visits from volunteer committees. "Based on extensive WASC visits, it is clear that Laurel Springs offers a strong academic opportunity for students. The school is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges," said David Brown, executive director at Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Embarking on a new plan of action for school improvement, Laurel Springs places coaching students and parents at its foundation in an effort to build confidence and good study habits, while honoring different learning styles. The action plan includes mapping the entire curriculum to California state standards and learning styles compatibility, supporting positive time management for independent learning, and data management for responsible decision making school-wide.

Laurel Springs is committed to the WASC self-study process that facilitates collaboration focused on student learning. "Laurel Springs School is proud to be a WASC accredited school. We found great value in the self-study process. We are proud to be one of the first distance learning programs to receive WASC accreditation, an honor first bestowed upon us in 2000," said Marilyn Mosley Gordanier, founder and executive director of Laurel Springs.

"Laurel Springs' accreditation is unique among distance learning programs," said Dennis Rice, director of education at Laurel Springs. "It's especially validating since the self study includes an in-depth examination of every aspect of our program, specifically as it pertains to student learning," he added. The faculty was applauded for their dedication to each family and the visiting committee was impressed with the articulate parents and students who met with them for a luncheon and conversation about the school. "The WASC team showed a lot of confidence in us to achieve our action plans over the next six years, and will visit us half-way through to help us evaluate our progress," said Fiona Spring, assistant director of education at Laurel Springs. WASC will visit Laurel Springs again in 2012 or 2013.
