Derek Evans' new book 'Dispatches from the Global Village' is based on his experiences as leader of more than 70 international peace and human rights delegations. Evans tells tragic and deeply moving stories of human suffering in his book, but maintains a sense of hope. He knows that when tyrants realize that they are human beings too, it can enable a connection to others, which is the beginning of reconciliation. [PRWeb Jun 7, 2007]

Kelowna, BC (PRWEB) June 7, 2007 -- Derek Evans is the former Deputy Secretary General of Amnesty International and consultant to the United Nations and other international organizations. He has written a new book based on his experiences entitled 'Dispatches from the Global Village'.

Derek Evans has dealt with many leaders with blood on their hands. Despite the moving and sometimes painful things he's heard and witnessed, Evans remains hopeful. His book is about what people are doing to make things better. These are teaching stories in which ordinary and extra-ordinary people are the heroes. The book reflect the author's own groping search for the path to peace and justice, and elegantly portrays the intimate link between the local and global realities of the world.

Evans has traveled the globe to meet with African warlords and the Dalai Lama, heads of state and victims of torture, to challenge the forces of injustice. He has negotiated with rebel factions in Sudan, and met under threat of death in the dead of night with families of 'disappeared' children in Sri Lanka. He knows what he's talking about when it comes to suffering and global injustice. In the words of Amir Hussain, a noted scholar and expert on Islam, "In Derek Evans' human-rights work a bad day is when prisoners of conscience are executed or people are tortured".

In an article recently published in the 'Penticton Herald', Evans commented on many North American politicians' choices regarding the Middle East. He sees many wearing what he calls 'ideological blinders', and wanting 'quick-fix solutions,' while being 'unwilling to learn' about the needs of the regions and people they are in conflict with. These leaders have chosen to 'blast their way in and install democracy in six months', rather than learn about what will work long-term. Evans says these issues are complex and there are no quick fixes on the road to understanding. But helping leaders realize they are human beings can enable a connection to others, which is the beginning of reconciliation.

The documentary film is a very powerful medium for shifting consciousness.

Yet many of our political leaders still live with the delusion that businesses can't afford to make the kinds of changes to help save our planet.

In March 2005, the United Nations released its Millenium Ecosystem Assessment. Among the findings, 2/3 of the world's ecosystems are seriously degraded, 90 percent of the world's fish stocks are depleted and climate change is not something that might happen - it's already happening.

Many people are not willing to face the psychological, social, biological, and cultural aspects which a change in perspective on the environment can involve. Some will hear about the climate crisis and delude themselves into thinking that technology can and will save the day.

A wiser and more helpful response, especially for Christians, is to find a way to step back into the flow of nature from which we have extricated ourselves.

In Darwin, Divinity, and the Dance of the Cosmos: An Ecological Christianity (Copperhouse 2007) Bruce Sanguin shows us the way to find a spiritual solution by integrating ecology into our concept of God.

Sanguin draws upon the work of mathematical physicist and cosmologist Brian Swimme and cultural historian Thomas Berry. Sanguin takes the next step of integrating evolution and the new physics with faith. The latest scientific understandings of the nature of the universe are woven together with biblical narratives, the teachings of Jesus, and a long suppressed wisdom tradition grounded in the feminine divine.

The end result is a truly evolutionary Christian theology - a feat few theologians have even attempted. "Our high schools are obsolete...they were designed 50 years ago to meet the needs of another age. Today, even when they work exactly as designed, our high schools cannot teach our kids what they need to know. Frankly, I am terrified for our workforce of tomorrow," explains Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

A.W.E. is the acronym for author Matthew Fox's proposed revolution in learning - an approach to balance the three R's. Fox says we need to approach learning, eldering, and mentoring in a way that honours the teachings of the Ancestors, that nurtures Wisdom, and that Educates through Fox's 10 C's. The 10 C's are the core of the A.W.E. philosophy:

* Cosmology and Ecology
* Contemplation, Meditation
* Creativity
* Chaos and Darkness
* Compassion
* Courage
* Critical Consciousness and Judgment
* Community
* Ceremony, Celebration and Ritual
* Character

Having spent his entire adult life in the field of education, Fox wrote this manifesto because he wanted to create a way of teaching that is wisdom-oriented and not just knowledge based. He believes that wisdom is what young people and adults want. Unfortunately, our current school systems do not provide this.

In a most unlikely pairing, Fox teams with hip-hop artist and filmmaker Professor Pitt to turn conventional "education" upside down and shake out what is no longer working. Pitt uses music, video, and rap to communicate Fox's new educational principles in a DVD included with Fox's book. Watch the YouTube video to see Professor Pitt in action.

"Mellowed out my fifth grade kids in the Bronx (at the school with the highest crime rate in New York City). Beautiful and power(ful) and simple eloquence. I truly achieved an altered state here - awesome. Perfect video to introduce…( the concept of)… meditation (and impermanence, etc.) into the ears of young modern people. I put it to my favorites now, because I cannot imagine a better bridge from meditation to modern music, (for) modern children....."
- Comments posted by YouTube.com viewers of Professor Pitt's video entitled "Meditation."

To continue to reach out to youth in new ways, Fox also has a team that creates events called techno cosmic masses which integrate live music, electronica, multimedia imagery, as well as eastern and indigenous spiritual elements, to create a multi-cultural, intergenerational, and ecumenical form of worship. To learn more about the Techno Cosmic Mass, visit www.thecosmicmass.com..

Fox has been called one of the great prophetic voices of our time by David C. Korten, author of 'When Corporations Rule the World,' and 'The Great Turning.'

"Matthew Fox might well be the most creative, the most comprehensive, surely the most challenging religious-spiritual teacher in America. He has the… skill to fill this role at a time when the more official Christian theological traditions are having difficulty in establishing any vital contact with either the spiritual possibilities of the present or with their own most creative spiritual traditions of the... A.W.E. is the acronym for author Matthew Fox's proposed revolution in learning - an approach to balance the three R's. Fox says we need to approach learning, eldering, and mentoring in a way that honours the teachings of the Ancestors, that nurtures Wisdom, and that Educates through Fox's 10 C's. The 10 C's are the core of the A.W.E. philosophy:

* Cosmology and Ecology
* Contemplation, Meditation
* Creativity
* Chaos and Darkness
* Compassion
* Courage
* Critical Consciousness and Judgment
* Community
* Ceremony, Celebration and Ritual
* Character
